“Adventure Tour on Fraser Island” Steibock79’s photos around Fraser Island, Australia

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Fraser Island, Australia by TravelPod blogger Steibock79 titled “Adventure Tour on Fraser Island”

Steibock79’s travel blog entry:

“We left the Gold Coast with our Mitsubishi Pajero on Tuesday morning around 09.30 AM. We drove for about five hours the 560 kilometers up to Hervey Bay. We arrived well in time to park our car at the secured parking area and to check-in and the ferry terminal for the catamaran which was departing at 4.00 PM to our hotel resort on Fraser Island. So we had a small snack, Carol took six pieces of natural Oysters as usual, before boarding our speed boat. The crossing to the Kingfisher Bay Resort took us around 50 minutes, a relaxing cruise. On Fraser Island we were picked up at the Jetty and escorted to our hotel, where we received a welcome drink. Soon after we checked in our room where our luggage has already been deposited. It was close to sunset already and we decided to go for a short bush walk to the nearby lookout within the resort compound, a 2.4 kilometer return journey. When we arrived back at the jetty we could enjoy the wonderful sunset. Unfortunately we arrived about two minutes late, so we missed part of the sunset. Eventually we went back to our hotel and had our dinner at the main restaurant. That day they served a Mediterranean Buffet.

The next day we got up early in order to pick up our four wheels drive car which we had booked to explore the sandy island. We went to the office at 8.00 AM when they opened their doors and had to watch a safety briefing video which lasted for 35 minutes. Driving on Fraser Island is very tricky as they don’t have any paved roads. Inlands one has to drive on narrow and bumpy sandtracks which only allowed one way traffic so they have a lot of passing places in order to allow the cars to cross. Speed limit on these tracks where limited to 30 kilometers per hour. The main traffic however goes up and down along the eastern beach on the famous 75-miles-beach. There the maximum speed limit was 60 kph. However one had to be cautios as the beach was also used as a runway for the sightseeing planes. We also received an exact plan which indicated the high tide and the restricted time period when the beach was flooded. During this phase driving on the beach was is not possible.

After this extended safety briefing we could finally start our adventuorous day trip and it really started with a baptism of fire as the first road segment leaving the Kingfisher Bay Resort was the most tricky part to drive due to the soft sand conditions. I was the designated driver for the day and had quite some difficulties to get used how to drive through the soft sand using the high and the low four wheel drive gears. Driving through sand is similar to driving through deep powder snow and even with a very good four wheels drive car one can get easely stuck. So after only a five minutes drive we got stuck for the first time. Luckily some other cars followed soon after and the people where very helpful in pushing us out again. Only 500 meters after that the patrol car of the car rental company got stuck aswell so another push job had to be done. After the first five kilometers i got used to drive under those horrible conditions and the track got slightly better so we were able to manage the twelve kilometers to the Lake Mackenzie. It was a very shaky and bumpy drive and Carol even got some bruises on her lower backside.

Lake Mackenzie is a very beautiful lake with a nice white sandy beach. Perfect conditions to have a nice swim. we enjoyed a couple of minutes and explored the beach before heading further to the Eurong Resort on the East side of the Island. Once we reached Eurong we were just in time for the time slot which allowed us to drive along the 75-Miles-Beach. So we took the opportunity and drove 32 kilometers up the beach to the Pinnacles for a photo stop. From there the conditions along the beach would become more difficult again …”

“The Great Ocean Road” Mr-mrs_pickles’s photos around 12 Apostles, Australia

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to 12 Apostles, Australia by TravelPod blogger Mr-mrs_pickles titled “The Great Ocean Road”

Mr-mrs_pickles’s travel blog entry:

“”How you going?” This is the question that every Aussi seems to greet you with in any store or building. It’s quite nice, and a very big change from the hustle and bustle of SE Aisa. Our over night bus ride to Melbourne was on a nice big coach with a movie, working reading lights and quiet background music - also a nice difference from the loud, ear splitting Kareoke of SE Asia. Although we were on this 12 hour and somewhat comfortable bus journey, neither of us got much sleep once again. We arrived in Melbourne around 6:30am, and were both a little worse for wear as this was our third night out of four without a bed to sleep in. (Good thing we got 12 hours of sleep the day before). We hauled our large packs onto our backs and headed in the direction of Car Rental places, who kindly enough opened up all their shops all on the same block. Unfortunately for us, this block was about 8 blocks away from our bus stop. Picture each of us with a daypack, (large bookbag), on our fronts, our HUGE backpacks on our backs, a smaller carry-on with some snacks in a grocery bag in Trevor’s left hand, and an 800g Value Pack box of Corn Flakes in my right. We walked the eight monstorous blocks, uphill…both ways (well, ok, one way, but it was a long way), carrying all of our stuff - which was too heavy for an airplane, remember…and we finally arrived in the section that had about 6 car rental places. We ended up renting a little Hyundi Getz. Two words to describe it: “Nissan Micra” We tossed our heavy bags into the hatch as well as the backseat, and headed out towards Great Ocean Road. Here in Australia, they drive on the left hand side of the road, again, much different than Aisa where they drive wherever they want on the road. Here are some things Trevor had to get used to. 1) The obvious, driving on the left hand side of the road. 2) Sitting on the right hand side of the car. (Although he looked very sweet opening the car door for Dana every time, he actually thought it was the drivers side of the car! 3) Shifting with his left hand. I suppose this would be like brushing your teeth with you left hand, except when you change speeds from eye teeth to molars, it doesn’t grind nearly as much as shifting from second to third. 4) Traffic Circles - Trevor doesn’t know where to go when driving on the RIGHT! Apparently Australia does not believe in a four-way stop because we haven’t seen one, and we’ve done many, many circle in our little car trip. 5) The Dreaded Blinker - this relatively easy concept was what Trevor struggled with the most. Everytime we had to make a turn, Trevor apparrently saw rain and the windshield whipers flew on followed by a couple of choice words. By the time he flipped the whipers off and found the signal lever, we had already turned. All in all, after about 1000km in three days, Trevor had successfully mastered the Aussi driving style. Our three days with the car were great as we didn’t have to plan and then pack, and then re-pack our bags up everytime we went somewhere. It was nice to do a rough job of it and toss it all in the car. Our road trip took us three days. Unfortunately, our drive for the entire first day was quite rainy, so our stops were few and far between and when we did stop it was quite short. Our first day took us to Bells Beach and the town Lorne. Our second day was fabulous! It included the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, and then on our way back we visited Apollo Bay, Anglesea and Torquay. Our final day took us back to Melbourne again in time for our night bus back to Sydney. (Idiots). Bells Beach - This beach is one of the most popular beaches for surfing in Australia. Due to the rain, however, we only stopped shortly to watch some of the surfers catching the waves. Lorne - We spent the night in Lorne at an extremely clean hostel. There a few other Canadians there as well, and we met some great people. A restaurant below our hostel had a live band and we went for some drinks with Steve (Australia) and Lindsay (England). The next day was January 30th, the sun was out, and we headed off to one of the greatest sights on Great …”
