Thrifty Car Rentals Review - You rent a car, but the deal is a bomb!

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

In february 2011, I rented a time bomb from Thrifty Car Rentals. I thought I was renting a car, that was what I booked, but Thrifty fooled me. After the first 200 kilometers the car started to fail, and my wife and I had a tough time for 15 days!

I was with my wife in Portugal and decided to rent a car with Thrifty to go to Spain. Our road trip started on a cold rainy day of winter, and the first thing to fail was the air conditioning. Have you tried to drive a car when it’s cold outside without air conditioning? Well, the windshield gets dangerously foggy, and the only way to fix this is by opening the window. Thank god I was in Spain and not in Canada. It was “only” 9ºC outside. Blood doesn’t freeze at this temperature.

But that was only the begining…

The next day I noticed that one of the tires was flat, so I filled it up. But that tire was actually loosing air, permanently and gradually, so I had to do that everyday for two weeks. And the reason is because Thrifty doesn’t offer assistance to their clients in Spain, even though I was only 200 kilometers away from their closest agency.

They didn’t offer (or accepted, after I asked) to send me a replacement car. Instead, they told me I should fix their vehicle myself!

When I finally got back to Lisbon and expressed my discontent, they didn’t care much, and just offered a miserable 20% discount, as a deal to get rid of me. The amount would be refunded directly to my credit card account.

And that’s when I was fooled again. I should have known they would never reimburse me. They were only trying to get rid of a complaining client before another sucker came in to burn his money away with them.

But I was still hopeful, trusting on the company and thinking that was an isolated problem when, one month Iater, I sent an e-mail through their website, at Thrifty.com explaining what hapened. Few days later they confirmed my fear when I read their answer saying that was not their problem and I should deal straight with their agency at Lisbon. As if Thrifty Portugal, at Lisbon, was not really Thrifty.

It’s really disapointing. I recomend this company to be a (bad) case of study for business schools around the world.

How To Find Cheap Airfare

Nothing makes a flight more pleasant than knowing you got your ticket at the lowest possible price.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Computer with internet access
Telephone
Some patience
Flexibility

Step 1: Plan ahead

Plan ahead. Airfares are usually lowest if you book at least 21 days in advance.

Step 2: Be flexible

Be flexible about departure and return dates. Fares are generally cheaper if you stay over a Saturday night.

Tip: The best fares are often available on Wednesdays between midnight and 1 a.m.; that’s when most airlines readjust their prices for the week.

Step 3: Consider alternate airports

Consider alternate airports. Say you want to go to New Orleans. Flying into Baton Rouge may be cheaper, and it’s only an hour away.

Step 4: Check online travel sites

Search online travel sites like travelocity.com, cheapflights.com, expedia.com, hotwire.com, and bestfares.com. Check at least three before making your selection, since fares can vary by hundreds of dollars.

Step 5: Check airline’s website

Before making a purchase on a travel site, head to the actual airline’s website. Sometimes, booking through the airline itself can snag you a cheaper seat.

Tip: Discount carriers like Southwest and JetBlue don’t always show up on travel sites, so search their websites directly.

Step 6: Call airline’s 800 number

Call the airline’s 800 number and ask for their lowest fare—without giving specific travel dates. Service representatives often don’t tell you about lower fares that are just a day or two before or after your target date.

Tip: When calling airlines, always be polite and friendly. Studies show service people will go the extra mile for you if you’re nice to them.

Step 7: Have a good trip

Pack your suitcase and have a good trip!

Culebra, Puerto Rico - an airplane tour of the island

Friday, November 11th, 2011

“One of the Spanish Virgin Islands”

Culebra is a small tropical island in the Caribbean. It’s considered a part of Puerto Rico but is actually located closer to the US Virgin Islands - St. Thomas is just 10 miles way.

Two thousand residents call the island home. Visitors from all over the world come to see the magical beaches. Flamenco Beach in particular is world famous. Just a few years back it was named by the Travel Channel as one of the top ten beaches.

Only 7 miles by 3, the island is very small in size. But what it lacks in size it makes up in pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. It offers fantastic snorkeling opportunities at several US allocated wildlife reserves.

Visitors coming to the island often stay at rental homes. There are a few small hotels and resort style accommodations. But don’t expect to find the Hilton or anything like that. This island is proud that it only has one franchised business on the whole island (Thrifty Car Rental).

The best way to reach the island is by small plane from San Juan, Puerto Rico. You can always arrive by Ferry Boat

If you want to escape to an island paradise where you can hike to a beach and be the only one there - consider the beautiful island of Culebra. It’s my favorite little island in the Caribbean.

Travel Tips: Rental Car Insurance Explained

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Car rental insurance in Europe can is one of those things that you should have figured out before you travel. It can be a little confusing, so here is a short video that will attempt to explain the way that it works.

Transcript of Voice Over:
There are many things to think about before you travel, and car rental insurance is something you will want to have figured out before you leave. Auto Europe typically offers basic rates and inclusive rates on most rentals. A basic rate includes fire protection, and 3rd party liability insurance. This would include damage to other vehicles or property, but not the rental car itself. The reason we offer the basic rate is because some credit cards may cover your collision and theft insurance. It is up to you to contact them to find out if you have coverage.  For those without credit card coverage, inclusive rates will have collision and theft built into the price. This insurance covers the vehicle in the event it is damaged in an accident or stolen. There is almost always a deductible, so it is important you check your voucher to see what it is.  Extra insurance may be available at the counter to lower the deductible amount, or for the glass, tires, undercarriage, or roof of the rental car. Car Hire Fine Print , Beat it

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Hiring a rental car using the CarTrawler Booking Engine should be simple and straight forward. But as with most transactions you should always pay attention to the terms of service so there are no nasty surprises.
Some people call it Fine print, but for most it’s where the detail of your car rental is clarified and explained.
So, What should you take particular note of in your rental conditions when hiring a car?
Two common rental polices that can cause confusion relate to Fuel & Millage.
Our Tip is to check the Fuel policy in your Rental confirmation Voucher.
Generally Pick up Full-Return Full is considered the best value. You’ll find more detail in our Fuel Policy Explained video on www.cartrawlersupport.com.

Most rental providers will offer Unlimited Millage as standard, but again check your rental terms to be sure, as it may not always be the case.
Some rental agents include additional drivers in the base cost, others may charge a fee, But all will require the additional drivers present their licence in person at the rental desk also.
Generally speaking you need to inform the rental car company if there are going to be other people driving the car.
Finally, check the rental Voucher & Conditions to ensure your booking isn’t going to present you with any unexpected charges.
Policies and terms of service vary depending on your chosen Rental supplier, so make life easy and spend a few moments reading yours, you’ll see the benefit at the rental desk with a hassle free pick up.
If you have any questions, it’s likely we already have an answer for you on www.Cartrawlersupport.com, so make use of the Quick Search feature and be sure to Drive Off Happy
