Ryanair , The Low Fares Airline

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Ryanair (ISEQ: RYA, LSE: RYA, NASDAQ: RYAAY) is an Irish low cost airline with its head office at Dublin Airport, Ireland, and with primary operational bases at Dublin Airport and London Stansted Airport.

Ryanair operates almost 250 Boeing 737-800 aircraft on over 1,100 routes across Europe and Morocco from over 43 bases. The airline has been characterised by rapid expansion, a result of the deregulation of the air industry in Europe in 1997 and the success of its low cost business model. Ryanair is Europe’s largest low-cost carrier, the 3rd largest airline in Europe in terms of passenger numbers and the largest in the world in terms of international passenger numbers.

Ryanair now has a number of low-cost competitors. In 2004, approximately 60 new low-cost airlines were formed. Although traditionally a full-service airline, Aer Lingus moved to a low-fares strategy from 2002, leading to a much more intense competition with Ryanair on Irish routes.[citation needed]

Airlines which attempt to compete directly with Ryanair are treated competitively, with Ryanair being accused by some of reducing fares to significantly undercut their competitors. In response to MyTravelLite, who started to compete with Ryanair on the Birmingham to Dublin route in 2003, Ryanair set up competing flights on some of MyTravelLite’s routes until they pulled out. Go was another airline which attempted to offer services from Ryanair’s hub at Dublin to Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland. A fierce battle ensued, which ended with Go withdrawing its service from Dublin.

In September 2004, Ryanair’s biggest competitor, EasyJet, announced routes to the Republic of Ireland for the first time, beginning with the Cork to London Gatwick route. Until then, easyJet had never competed directly with Ryanair on its home ground. Easyjet announced in July 2006, that it was withdrawing its Gatwick-Cork, Gatwick-Shannon and Gatwick-Knock services; within two weeks, Ryanair also announced it would withdraw its own service on the Gatwick-Knock and Luton-Shannon routes.

Ryanair has asked the high court to investigate why it has been refused permission to fly from Knock to Dublin. This route was won by CityJet, which was unable to operate the service. The runner up, Aer Arann, was then allowed to start flights, a move Ryanair criticises on the basis that not initiating an additional tender process was unlawful.

DFDS Seaways cited competition from low-cost air services, especially Ryanair, which now flies to Glasgow Prestwick Airport and London Stansted Airport from Gothenburg City Airport, as the reason for scrapping the Newcastle-Gothenburg ferry service in October 2006. It was the only dedicated passenger ferry service between Sweden and the United Kingdom, and had been running under various operators since the 19th century.

How To Hot-Wire a Car

No keys and no help in sight? Here’s how to get your car moving again.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Proof of ownership of the vehicle
A hammer
A flat-head screwdriver
A Phillips-head screwdriver
Your car’s manual
Insulated gloves
Wire cutters and strippers

Warning: Hot-wiring a car is dangerous and is likely to damage your vehicle. Never hot-wire anyone’s car but yours and be prepared to show your proof of ownership.

Step 1: Try a screwdriver

Pound a flat-head screwdriver into the ignition and turn it like a key. This will ruin the ignition cylinder, but it’s effective on many cars manufactured before the mid ’90s.

Step 2: Remove the ignition cover

If the car doesn’t start, pull the screwdriver out of the ignition and remove the screws in the panels on the top and bottom of the steering column. Next, use the flat-head screwdriver to pry off the plastic panels and expose the ignition cylinder and the wires running to it. Be gentle to minimize damage to the steering column.

Step 3: Identify the battery and starter wires

Identify the battery and starter wires. Generally the two red wires handle the car’s power, and the one or two brown wires connect to the starter. Consult your car’s manual to learn its specific wire color code.

Step 4: Connect the power wires

Put on the gloves, and use the cutters to cut the power wires from the cylinder. Then, strip the ends and connect them by twisting them together to provide power to the lights, radio, and other electrical systems.

Step 5: Connect the starter wires

Cut the starter wires from the cylinder and strip the ends. Be extremely careful not to touch the exposed ends as they carry a powerful live current and will shock you. Touch them together, and as soon as the car has started, pull them apart and tape the ends to avoid getting shocked while driving.

Tip: If the car has only has one starter wire, touch it to the exposed part of the connected power wires to start the car.

Step 6: Deal with additional security

Deal with additional security. In some cars the steering-wheel lock’s bolt can be pried open by jamming a screwdriver between the top of the steering column and the steering wheel.

Tip: Newer cars have complex wheel locks and electronic key systems that are nearly impossible to circumvent without tools and in-depth knowledge.

Step 7: Turn the car off

Turn the car off by separating the power wires from each other. Now it’s time to find that extra set of keys and head to the repair shop, pronto.
